Our favourite dog-friendly travel spots in the South of France

Updated: Oct 2

Looking for something slightly different from the mountainous regions of the Alps? Head to the world famous South of France. There you’ll find alluring beaches along the Côte D’Azur, fragrant lavender fields and charming medieval villages perched on mountain sides.

Dogs in Saint Paul de Vence

Saint Paul de Vence

Saint Paul de Vence is an idyllic Provencal town nestled on the hills of the French Riviera. It is famous as a mecca for artists like Picasso, Dufy and Matisse and Chagall who have been coming here since the 1920s. Go back in time as you wander through the quaint cobbled stone streets and discover the charming galleries, shops and restaurants.

Dog in Éze

Èze

Visit the fortress village of Èze to be inspired by the wondrous panoramic views of the sea of the Côte D’Azur. Although dogs are not allowed entry into Le Jardin Exotique, a stroll around the centuries old stone work is definitely not one to be missed. Pop into Les Remparts at hotel Le Cherve D’Or for a quick refreshment or lunch and enjoy their gourmet offerings. If your dog is sniffing the air curiously it might be because the world famous factory of fragrance house La Fragonard is right there.

Dogs in Cap D’Antibes

Cap D’Antibes

Antibes is probably one of the most recognisable seaside towns on the French Riviera. Explore the beautiful old town and visit the bustling markets and thriving café scene. The food market at Place de Gaulle opens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings, selling the freshest produce of the area and local delicacies. Try out the local speciality, freshly baked socca  - a chickpea flatbread.

The coastal walk around the Cap D’Antibes is stunning. Take a leisurely stroll along the coast and enjoy the turquoise blue waters to the jagged rocky outcrops.

Dog at Le Negresco Beach Club

Nice

Explore the traffic-free streets of Nice old town and the market at Cours Saleya, which hosts four different markets on alternating days. Check out the amazing gelato selection at Fenocchio and maybe your pooch can have a bite too.

If you’re looking for the best seafood in town, head to Boccaccio on Rue Massena, we highly recommend their seafood platter and paella. Book ahead and let them know you’re bringing your furry companion as they are very popular.

Le Negresco Beach Club is a unique and timeless legend of the French Riviera. Le Negresco is one of the last French Luxury independent hotels which offers a real testimonial of French Art and History. It is a great place to spend an afternoon with your dog on the beach front sun beds, while enjoying the live DJ and a glass rosé.

Beaches

Depending on the time of year you visit, not all beaches will allow dogs entry, particularly during the summers months. However, there are designated dog beaches for your pooches to run free and enjoy the fresh pristine waters. We recommend the Plage de l’hippodrome in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Nearer to Nice old town there is also the dog beach of Lenval and La Lanterne.  Though not specifically a dog friendly beach, Plage d'Èze is great pebble beach to visit after a day out in enchanting Èze village.
