This guide delves into the essentials of exploring Italy with your four-legged friend, ensuring a memorable and pet-friendly experience.

Travelling to Italy with Your Furry Friend

Italy stands out as one of Europe's most dog-friendly destinations, and we highly recommend exploring its charms with your furry companion. But how exactly can you travel to dog-friendly Italy with your pet?

Let’s delve into the paperwork requirements and transportation options from various countries, including essential steps before travelling with your dog to Italy!

Travel from EU

The regulations for travellers within the European Union (EU) are straightforward, mirroring those of most EU countries. Here are the requirements your dog must fulfil, including:

  • ISO Microchipped

  • Have a valid rabies vaccine administered at least 21 days before crossing the border.

  • Documented in a pet passport (some airlines may request them, along with a health certificate, for air travel)

Travel from Outside the EU

Travellers outside the EU must obtain an EU pet health certificate unless their dog already possesses an EU pet passport from a previous EU visit. This certificate necessitates microchip implantation and a rabies vaccine administered at least 21 days before EU entry, with a valid duration.

Only authorised veterinarians can issue the EU pet health certificate endorsement by an official veterinarian in the traveller's country before departure. They must be issued within 10 days of arrival in Italy.

Even though dealing with the paperwork may seem overwhelming, take comfort in knowing that dog-friendly Italy is ready and excited to offer you and your furry friend a wonderful trip.

Exploring Italy with Your Furry Friend

.

Italy boasts a plethora of pet-friendly locales waiting to be discovered. From expansive parks to picturesque beaches, your dog has ample opportunities to frolic and play.

Many restaurants, cafes, and shops also warmly welcome furry patrons, allowing you to indulge in Italy's culinary delights without leaving your canine companion behind.

1. Dining Out in Italy with a Dog

You'll discover plenty of dog-friendly eateries when dining out in Italy with your dog. Although some places might have signs saying no to dogs, many restaurants and cafes are happy to welcome them indoors.

It's best to check with the waiter or call ahead to book and avoid disappointment. Where available, you may also prefer outdoor seating on pleasant days, as owners generally appreciate it.

Indoor market halls like Mercato Centrales in Rome and Florence also warmly welcome dogs, although large dogs may require muzzles. These bustling markets offer a variety of culinary delights and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for dining with your furry companion.

2. Shopping in Italy with a Dog

Milan is a paradise for luxury shopping with your furry friend. They can join you on shopping sprees across Italy, strolling effortlessly through clothing boutiques and gift stores. It's common to see dogs browsing alongside their owners in many Italian shops and malls.

Unlike some parts of Europe, even grocery shopping in Italy came with a surprise. For example, the local Turin grocery store warmly welcomed your furry friend inside.

Also, your shopping escapades had to extend to the renowned Eataly store in Genoa, where you can indulge in fancy Italian groceries with a loyal dog right by your side, making each moment a memorable experience.

Dog-Friendly Accommodations in Italy

Finding dog-friendly accommodations in Italy is effortless. Whether looking for lakeside Airbnbs overlooking enchanting Lake Como, cosy retreats across Sicily, centrally located hotels in vibrant Milan, or rustic agriturismos tucked away in the heart of Tuscany, your options unfold seamlessly.

Take a look at this!

1. Italy's Hotel Landscape

When assessing the dog-friendliness of hotels across different European cities, Florence and Rome emerged as moderate contenders, with 49% and 31% of hotels allowing furry companions, respectively. Yet, with the abundance of hotels and guesthouses dotting most Italian cities, the options for dog-friendly stays remain abundant.

Anticipate that hotels may warmly welcome pint-sized pups, often with a nominal fee.

2. Airbnb Adventures

Should you seek wallet-friendly and dog-friendly accommodations or prefer the comfort of your abode? Look only as far as Airbnb and other holiday home rental platforms.

While city-centre apartments in Italy might be noisy for our sensitive puppy, don't worry! We can help you find plenty of other options. Plus, there are loads of charming farm stays where you and your furry friend can enjoy an authentic Italian getaway.

Embarking to Italy with your dog opens doors to unforgettable experiences and cherished memories.
