Travelling to France With a Dog? Here Is What You Need to Know!

France is not just for wine lovers, art fanatics, and baguette enthusiasts; it is a paws-itively perfect destination for you and your furry best friend. Whether you dream of café-hopping in Paris or strolling through sunflower fields in Provence, travelling to France with a dog is doable (and seriously fun!) as long as you plan.

From paperwork to paw-friendly pit stops, here is your guide for taking your pup on the French adventure of a lifetime! C’est parti!

What You Need Before Travelling to France With a Dog

Let’s talk about doggy paperwork! Yes, it is a thing, and it is non-negotiable. So, what is on your need-it-now list? Let’s take a closer look at this!

Step 1: Microchip, Please!

France wants to ensure they know who is who, including your pup. Before anything else, get your dog microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip that meets ISO 11784/11785 standards.

It is like their passport ID; yes, it must be done before or at the same time as their rabies shot, which must be administered at least 21 days before travel. No chip, no chic Parisian adventure.

Tip: Ensure your vet scans it before your trip to confirm it is readable.

Step 2: Rabies Vaccine (a Must!)

Your dog needs a current rabies vaccination, no ifs, ands, or woofs. If it is their first time, wait 21 days post-vaccine before flying. Already vaccinated and up to date? You are one step closer to sipping wine in Bordeaux with your pup.

While not mandatory, additional vaccines like kennel cough and leptospirosis are highly recommended, especially if you plan countryside adventures or visit local dog parks.

Also, be aware that bringing puppies under 16 weeks old into France is prohibited, even if they have been vaccinated. With these preparations, you and your pup are all set to enjoy the delights of France together!

Step 3: Pet Paperwork

France does not accept just any old vet note. You will need a valid EU pet passport or an EU Animal Health Certificate, issued by an official accredited vet within 10 days of departure.

This document says, “Yes, my dog is good to go. " It is valid for four months of EU adventures.

Step 4: Know the No-Go Breeds

Sadly, France has a few breed restrictions. Dogs like Staffordshire Terriers, Mastiffs, and Tosa Inus cannot enter the country. Even dogs that look like these breeds might get turned away, so check ahead, and when in doubt, bring extra documentation or let Global Paws organise the documents for you and your furry companion.

Step 5: Airline Game Plan

Each airline has its own pet policy, so do not assume policies! Here are some pet-friendly airlines you might consider if you travel to France with a dog. Check this out!

Small pups (usually under 8kg) can sometimes remain in the cabin with you. Bigger dogs? Cargo it is, but do not worry, it is temperature-controlled and safe when handled right.

Pro tip: book early, ask all the questions, and ensure your crate is airline-compliant.

Step 6: Bonjour, France!

Once you land, head to customs and show off your pet’s paperwork like a proud parent. You will need:

  • Microchip info

  • Rabies certificate

  • Health certificate

Your dog should be on a leash; in some spots, muzzles are required, so keep one handy just in case.

Step 7: Exploring Like a Local

Good news! France is super dog-friendly. Your pup can sit beside you at cafés, sniff around beautiful parks, and maybe even hop on the metro. Just remember to keep them leashed, clean up after them (always), and check local rules wherever you go.

Now let’s talk about dog-friendly fun in France!

Where to Stay

From boutique hotels to countryside B&Bs, France has no shortage of dog-welcoming stays.

Here is what you can do!

  • Use filters on Booking.com or Airbnb to find options marked “pet-friendly”.

  • Want something wilder? Campgrounds in France are often pup-approved!

Places Your Pup Will Love

  • Champs de Mars, Paris – Grassy fields and Eiffel Tower views.

  • Plage de Carras, Nice – One of the few beaches that welcomes dogs year-round.

  • Verdon Gorge, Provence – Hiking heaven with water to splash in!

Dining Out? Bring the Dog!

Unlike some places, French cafés and bistros adore dogs, especially if you are sitting outside. A polite “Mon chien est-il le bienvenu?” is usually all it takes.

Quick Tips to Keep Your Trip Smooth

1. Pack Like a Pro

Bring:

  • Leash + harness

  • Collapsible water bowls

  • Doggy waste bags

  • A comfort toy or blanket

  • Snacks for the road (yes, treats count)

2. Know the Local Rules

In France, leash laws apply in public places, so keep your dog on a leash when out and about.

3. Be Emergency Ready

Look up local vets before you travel, and save the info in your phone. And just in case your pup gets a little too excited exploring, pop a GPS tracker on their collar. The best you can get is our GPR Pet Tag.
