Importing Pets to United States:

Requirement and Timeline

  • Preparation time: Between 1 - 2 months

  • ISO microchip – Implant a microchip before rabies vaccination


  • Complete the CDC Dog Import Form and the receipt

    • Have been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries for the last 6 months for dogs.

    • ADDITIONAL Import permit – IF the dog has been in a high-risk country in the past 6 months.


  • A Certification of USA-issued Rabies Vaccination

    • ALTERNATIVELY: A USDA-endorsed export health certificate – Required for USA-vaccinated dogs in a high-risk rabies country within the 6 months before entry.

  • Valid rabies serology titer report – from a CDC-approved laboratory (If not included on the CDC Dog Import Form above)

  • Rabies Vaccination and Microchip Certification – provided by a licensed veterinarian and endorsed by a government authority, for foreign-vaccinated dogs in a high-risk rabies country in the last 6 months.

  • Dogs cannot be less than 6 months old on arrival in the USA

  • Health certificate

  • All documents must be in English

    • ALTERNATIVELY: Have a certified English translation

  • No quarantine – For rabies-free/low-risk countries


ADDITIONAL REQ. For Foreign-vaccinated dogs coming from high-risk countries:

  • A Certification of Foreign-Issued Rabies Vaccination and Microchip Form 


  • Reservations at the CDC-Registered Animal Care Facility

    • No valid rabies serology titer means mandatory quarantine reservation for 28 days total. 


A certified translation issued by a licensed translator indicates an accurate and true representation of the original documents.
