Preparation Time: 1 to 15 months
Pet Health Checks: Ensure your pet is healthy and ready for travel
Rapid Slide Agglutination Test
Trypanosoma Evansi Card Agglutination Test and Giemsa Blood Smear
Babesia Gibsoni Immunofluorescence Antibody Test and Giemsa Blood Smear
Dirofilaria Immitis Microfilariae Filtration Test
Leishmaniasis Testing via Indirect Fluorescent Antibody, ELISA, Direct Agglutination, or Western Blot/Membrane Immunoassay
Microchip: Your pet must be microchipped (ISO 11784 and 11785 standards).
Vaccination Records: Ensure all records are up to date
For Dogs and cats: rabies (administered at least 30 days before departure, but no more than 12 months prior to arrival). A rabies tiger test (RNATT) is not required for pets entering South Africa from the US.
For Dogs: DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza).
For Cats: Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Respiratory Disease Complex.
Special Permit: Issued by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD) in South Africa.
Import Permit: Secure the required import documentation.
Health Certificate: Obtain from a licensed veterinarian and officially endorsed it by the USDA or equivalent in the departure country 10 days before travel.
Quarantine: Be prepared for potential quarantine requirements, ranging from 7 to 14 days in Johannesburg or Cape Town.
